Blog Post 45// With All Your Mind

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love Him with all your mind and with all your strength. Mark 12:30

Jesus was asked to sum it all up.

Jesus, help me out. There are hundreds of dos and don’ts. Is there a way to just give it to us straight? How do we know if we are really following God? What does He really want from us?

I think it’s a good question. Jesus thought for a moment and gave this famous response. It’s called the greatest commandment. Let’s talk about one part of it. The love Him with all your mind part.

What does it mean to worship God, to love Him with all your mind? I think it has to do with focus. How much do I

Focus my attention on God?

What do I think about first?
What do I think about most?

We used to call people just because we thought about them.
Text them just because.

Now, most of our calls are scheduled.

Hey man, thinking about you, maybe next week we can talk?

That’s what life has become for many. And it’s slipped into our relationship with God, too.

You know, I should probably talk to God more. He is good. God, let’s talk soon! See you Sunday?

But loving God with all your mind means that we purposefully focus our attention on Him. For more than a moment

And focus is a skill that has to be practiced. It has to be sharpened continually.

In fact, focus and faith are very much connected.

Your level of faith is determined by where you choose to focus.

This word for mind that Jesus uses has to do with understanding that leads to sound conclusions. It’s critical thinking. It’s thorough reasoning of who God is and what His word says.

It really means that there is a way to think that honors God.

Answer this: Does worry honor God? No. Why not?

It’s not that there aren’t difficulties and struggles. Of course there are. We have some good reasons to worry, don’t we?

It’s that worry honors the difficulties and struggles ABOVE God.

Worry monopolizes our attention.

But God wants the attention. Not because He needs it.

I need it!

He wants it. I need it.

If we can point our minds to sound conclusions, critical thinking that comes from a renewed mind washed in the truth of God’s Word, then it is possible to maintain a Godly perspective, a Godly frame of reference. To think like He thinks.

What would it like like for you to start loving God with all your mind? More on this soon.
