Psalm 128
A song of ascents.
1 Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to Him.
2 You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
4 Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord.
5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
6 May you live to see your children’s children—
peace be on Israel.
I believe so much in the power of memorizing Scripture.
It isn’t just for our kids. It’s for adults, too.
The benefits are too great to ignore.
Jesus constantly quoted the scriptures, and specifically, He often quoted from the book of Psalms.
In fact, the book of Psalms is the most commonly quoted book of the Bible in the New Testament.
Meaning, that when the second half of your Bible refers back to the first, most often it refers back to one of these Psalms, or songs.
Which makes total sense to me. Humans have this amazing ability to remember songs. Our brains are fascinating like that. Songs don’t even have to be good and we will remember them. The Liberty Mutual song comes to mind. 🙄
We could not sing a song for decades but then hear it and join along. They get stored away in some deep cerebral cavern.
The more we sing songs and the catchier they are, they’ll end up being branded on our brains and they are hard to forget.
A search through Jesus’ life will turn up Him constantly quoting from the amazing book of Psalms. On the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? is from Psalm 22.
So how does He do that? How do you quote a Scripture if your arms are nailed down? You, of course, can't pull out a Bible. The truth is, it has to be hidden somewhere.
It has to be hidden in your heart. How did Jonah, even in the belly of the whale, quote from the Bible, and specifically, quote from the Book of Psalms?
It was hidden in his heart.
You will only have in the hard, dark moments that which you have hidden.
You may want to read that again. And that’s why memorizing Scripture is a must.
What if you memorized Psalm 128 this week? What if we did it together?
But I have a hard time memorizing.
Nah, if you know all the words to Sweet Home Alabama or Don’t Stop Believin’ you can do 6 sentences. If you can remember the word Scaramouch in Bohemian Rhapsody you can remember Blessed are all who fear the Lord…
You can do it. I know you can.
