Someone, Not Something

He isn’t an it. He isn’t an energy. He isn’t a force or a vibe.
The Holy Spirit is He.
I think it’s possible to believe in the Holy Spirit and still relate to Him like He’s a thing.
We talk about feeling the Holy Spirit.
We talk about the power of the Holy Spirit.
We pray for the Holy Spirit to move.
All of that is biblical. But if we’re not careful, we start thinking about Him as some kind of spiritual electricity, something that gives you a little jolt when the bridge of that worship song hits just right.
Goosebumps? Must be the Holy Spirit.
Or maybe the air just kicked on…
Listen to how Jesus talks about Him:
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13
Jesus doesn’t talk about the Holy Spirit like a something.
He talks about Him like a Someone.
And all through the Bible, the Holy Spirit acts personally.
He speaks.
“The Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” Acts 13:2
He teaches.
“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26
He leads.
“Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Romans 8:14
He helps us pray.
“We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Romans 8:26
And here’s one that’s deeply personal: He can be grieved.
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” Ephesians 4:30
You don’t grieve electricity.
You don’t hurt the feelings of a force.
You grieve someone you have a relationship with.
Remember Ananias and Sapphira? They sold some property and gave part of the money to the church. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was that they pretended they were giving all of it. (It’s never about the amount. It’s always about the heart.)
Peter says:
“Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…? You have not lied just to human beings, but to God.” Acts 5:3–4
Did you catch that? You lied to the Holy Spirit. You lied to God.
This might feel like basic theology. But it matters, because how you understand who He is will determine how you relate to Him.
If the Holy Spirit is just a force, you want to use it.
If the Holy Spirit is just a feeling, you want to experience it.
If the Holy Spirit is just power, you want to get more of it.
But if the Holy Spirit is God, you don’t use Him. You can know Him. You don’t just seek something from Him. You seek Him.
Maybe some of us have spent years wanting to experience something from the Holy Spirit, when all along God has been inviting us to know Someone.
There’s a difference between those two things.
The Holy Spirit isn’t an experience to chase. He is a Person to know.
